If you own a business in the Greater Houston area, you already know the climate is brutal on anything that lives outside. Summer afternoons regularly push past 100 degrees. Humidity sits at swamp levels for half the year. Hurricane season runs from June through November. Hailstorms show up without warning. And during winter, sudden cold snaps can drop temperatures fifty degrees in a single day.
Now think about what that does to your business sign. The sign that you spent thousands of dollars on, that has your brand on it, that sits out in this weather twenty-four hours a day, year after year.
At Uni Signs, we design, fabricate, and install signs across the Greater Houston area, and we see firsthand what Houston weather does to outdoor signage. Some of it is preventable. Some of it just comes with the territory of operating in this climate. But every business owner should understand what they’re dealing with so they can make smart decisions about their signage.
Here’s what Houston weather is doing to your signs right now, and what you can do about it.

Heat and UV Damage Are the Slow Killers
The number one enemy of outdoor signs in Houston is not hurricanes. It’s the sun.
Direct sun exposure causes ultraviolet damage that breaks down materials at the molecular level over time. The effects build up slowly, so most business owners don’t notice the damage until it has become obvious. By then the sign already looks tired.
Common UV damage symptoms include faded paint on lettering and panels, sun bleached vinyl that has lost its color saturation, cracked or brittle acrylic faces on cabinet signs, yellowed or hazy lens covers over LED illumination, and dried out caulking and sealants around sign edges.
UV damage is cumulative. A sign installed in 2020 has now absorbed five summers of direct Houston sun. Even high quality materials show their age by year five or six.
What you can do: Choose UV stabilized vinyl when you order new signs or graphics. Make sure your sign company uses outdoor grade acrylic and paints rated for direct sun exposure. Consider mounting orientations that minimize direct afternoon sun when possible. And plan to refresh your sign face every five to seven years, even if the structure is still sound.
Humidity Is Worse Than You Think
Houston humidity averages around 75 percent year round. That moisture finds its way into every joint, seam, and seal on your sign.
For monument signs, humidity damage shows up as water staining on stucco or stone surfaces, mold or mildew growth in shaded areas, rust on internal steel framing, and discoloration around base flashings.
For lighted signs, humidity is especially destructive. Water vapor gets into electrical compartments, corrodes wiring connections, damages LED drivers, and shortens the lifespan of every electrical component inside the sign.
For vehicle wraps and window vinyl, prolonged humidity can cause adhesive failure at the edges of installed graphics. The vinyl itself holds up fine, but the bond between the vinyl and the surface starts to release at the perimeter.
What you can do: Make sure all sign installations include proper waterproofing and sealing at every penetration point. Insist on stainless steel hardware that resists corrosion. For electrical signs, verify that the cabinet has weep holes for water drainage and that wiring is properly waterproofed. For vehicle wraps and window graphics, choose premium adhesive vinyl rated for high humidity environments.
Hurricane Season Is Active Now
Hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through November 30. We are currently in the early weeks of the season, and now is the worst possible time to discover that your outdoor signs are not properly anchored.
Hurricane damage to signs comes in three main forms. Direct wind force can rip improperly anchored signs from their mountings or topple monument signs that lack adequate foundations. Flying debris can shatter sign faces, dent metal cabinets, and damage illuminated components. Storm surge flooding can destroy electrical components on signs mounted at lower elevations.
Even tropical storms that fall short of hurricane intensity can cause significant sign damage in Houston. Tropical Storm Imelda in 2019 dropped over forty inches of rain in parts of the metro area and damaged hundreds of outdoor signs even though it never reached hurricane status.
What you can do: Verify that your existing signs are anchored to current Texas Department of Insurance wind load requirements. Older signs installed before 2010 may not meet current standards. If your sign was installed before the codes were updated, consider having it inspected. For new signs, work with a licensed sign company that handles permitting properly and ensures wind load calculations are part of the engineering. Document your existing signs with photos and keep records of installation specifications for insurance purposes.

Hail Can Total a Sign in Minutes
Houston gets serious hail events most years. Large hailstones can cause cosmetic and structural damage to outdoor signs faster than any other weather event.
Channel letter signs with acrylic faces can crack or shatter from significant hail impacts. Monument signs with painted finishes show dents and chips. Vehicle wraps installed on parked vehicles get pockmarked. Cabinet signs with flat acrylic faces are especially vulnerable to hail because of their flat surface area.
The good news is that hail damage is usually covered by commercial property insurance, especially if your sign was professionally installed and you have documentation. The bad news is that insurance claims for sign damage are sometimes denied or undervalued when proper documentation is missing.
What you can do: Document your signs thoroughly with high resolution photos taken on a sunny day shortly after installation. Keep records of the installation invoice, materials used, and any structural drawings. After a hail event, photograph any damage immediately and contact your insurance provider before scheduling repairs. Work with a sign company that can provide professional damage assessments and replacement estimates that insurance adjusters will accept.

Sudden Temperature Swings Cause Material Stress
Houston winters bring occasional cold snaps that can drop temperatures from the seventies into the twenties within twenty-four hours. These rapid temperature changes cause expansion and contraction in sign materials that can lead to cracking, warping, and adhesive failures.
Materials most vulnerable to thermal stress include acrylic sign faces, vinyl graphics on outdoor surfaces, sealants and caulks around sign joints, and electrical components in temperature sensitive equipment.
Even without freezing temperatures, the daily swing from cool morning to hot afternoon causes constant material movement. Over years, this contributes to material fatigue and shortened lifespan.
What you can do: Use materials rated for temperature swings typical of the Texas Gulf Coast region. For electrical signs, make sure the cabinet has adequate ventilation to prevent extreme heat buildup during summer afternoons. For exterior vinyl applications, follow proper installation procedures including surface preparation and curing time.
When Should You Replace vs Refresh
Many Houston business owners assume their weathered sign needs complete replacement. Often that is not true. A sign with structural integrity but cosmetic weather damage can usually be refreshed at a fraction of replacement cost.
Signs that are good candidates for refresh include monument signs where only the panels or letters are faded but the base is structurally sound, cabinet signs where the structure is solid but the acrylic face is cracked or yellowed, channel letter signs where the returns are intact but the faces or LED components need updating, and lighted signs where the overall structure is fine but the illumination has failed.
Signs that probably need full replacement include monument signs with cracking or sinking foundations, cabinet signs where the metal cabinet itself has rusted through, channel letter signs where the structural mountings have corroded, and any sign that no longer meets current wind load requirements for your area.
A professional sign company can evaluate your existing signage and tell you honestly whether you need a refresh or replacement. We do this for free as part of our on-site survey process.

Regular Maintenance Extends Sign Life Significantly
Most outdoor signs receive zero maintenance during their entire lifespan. That is a mistake. A simple maintenance schedule can extend sign life by years and prevent small problems from becoming expensive failures.
Annual maintenance tasks should include visual inspection of all exterior surfaces for cracks, fading, or damage, cleaning of sign faces with appropriate cleaners that do not damage materials, inspection of electrical connections and components, testing of all LED or fluorescent illumination, and verification that mounting hardware is secure and free of corrosion.
For most businesses, hiring a professional sign maintenance service once a year is more cost effective than reactive repairs when something fails. Many sign companies offer maintenance packages that include annual inspections plus discounted rates on any needed repairs.
How Uni Signs Approaches Weather Resistance
We design and fabricate signs at our Katy facility specifically for Greater Houston operating conditions. That means we use UV stabilized materials, weatherproof electrical assemblies, and structural designs that meet current Texas wind load requirements.
Every monument sign, pylon sign, and channel letter installation we complete includes a five year warranty on structural integrity and LED components, plus a three year warranty on vinyl. Our warranty does not cover vandalism or weather related damage from extreme events like hurricanes, but it does cover normal weather wear that would indicate a material or installation defect.
When weather events happen and signs are damaged, we work directly with business owners and their insurance adjusters to document damage, provide professional repair or replacement estimates, and complete the work as quickly as possible.
