Sign Company in Tomball, TX
Tomball’s sign rules changed on January 1, 2026. The city adopted a new Unified Development Code that replaced its old sign chapter entirely — new permitted sign types, new prohibitions, new standards. Most of what you’ll find online about signs in Tomball describes rules that no longer exist. At UNI Signs we design, fabricate, permit and install custom business signs for Tomball companies, with 10+ years of experience and 140+ five-star Google reviews.
Signs for a Growing Tomball
Tomball has done something unusual: it grew fast without losing its center. The historic downtown around Main Street and Market Street still anchors the city — the depot, the German heritage, the weekend markets — while the commercial growth spreads out along SH-249 and the Tomball Tollway, FM 2920 and the Grand Parkway.
The rooftops keep coming: Wildwood at Northpointe, Amira, Raleigh Creek and Willowcreek Ranch, plus the daytime population from HCA Houston Healthcare Tomball and Lone Star College–Tomball. That mix means two very different signage problems in one city: a storefront in a century-old downtown building, and a pad site that has to read at highway speed on 249. We design differently for each.
Every Sign Your Tomball Business Needs
We’re a full-service, one-stop sign company — design, permits, fabrication and installation all handled in-house:
- Channel Letter Signs — illuminated 3D letters, the gold standard for storefronts.
- Monument & Ground Signs — the freestanding type Tomball’s code is built around.
- Storefront & Building Signs — get seen from the road and the parking lot.
- Pole & Pylon Signs — but only if you’re near a state highway. More on that below.
- Lobby & Interior Signs — a professional first impression inside.
- LED & Digital Signs — tightly restricted here; we’ll tell you honestly whether yours is possible.
- Vehicle Wraps & Graphics — turn your fleet into moving billboards across northwest Houston.
- Window & Wall Vinyl — with a hard 50% coverage limit to design around.
The Rule That Changes How You Plan a Sign in Tomball
Buried in the new code is a sentence that flips the usual logic:
“Any sign not specifically mentioned in this article is prohibited unless approved by City Council.”
Most cities publish a list of what you can’t do and allow the rest. Tomball does the opposite: if your sign type isn’t explicitly named in the code, it’s illegal by default — and the only path is a request to City Council.
That matters for anything creative. A custom-shaped installation, an unusual mounting, a sign type borrowed from another market — none of it is automatically fine here. The design conversation has to start with “is this type listed?” before it gets to “how big can it be?”
What Tomball Allows, by Sign Type
| Sign type | What the code says |
|---|---|
| Ground signs | One per 100 feet of street frontage, with a minimum 100 feet of separation between ground signs on the same property. Every lot gets at least one. Corner lots may have one per frontage if that frontage is at least 50 feet. |
| Shared centers | Where two or more businesses share parking or pedestrian ways: one ground sign per five entities, up to 300 sq ft, plus 50 sq ft for each entity beyond five named on the sign. |
| Pole signs | Only permitted within 50 feet of a State Highway right-of-way line. Off the highway, a pole sign is not an option — it has to be a ground sign. |
| Wall signs | May not extend more than 12 inches out from the wall, and may not extend above the roofline. |
| Roof signs | Permitted, but no more than 24 inches in height, and never above the zoning district’s maximum height. (Houston bans roof signs outright — Tomball doesn’t.) |
| Projecting signs | Anything extending more than 12 inches from the wall counts as projecting; maximum projection 48 inches. |
| Marquee signs | Maximum projection 60 inches from the wall face. |
| Window signs | May not obscure more than 50 percent of visibility through any individual window. |
| Wayfinding signs | Maximum 40 sq ft, arrows and directions only. Requires a wayfinding plan showing dimensions, colors, font size, mounting height and distance to nearby driveways and traffic control devices. |
Digital and LED Signs: Read This Before You Budget One
Tomball restricts changeable electronic message signs harder than almost any city in the area. Under the code, CEVMS are only permitted for public tax-supported schools and along state rights-of-way. Anywhere else, you need an application to and approval from City Council.
And if you clear that hurdle, the operating rules are strict:
- Messages must be static — no blinking, flashing, scrolling or animation
- Minimum 8 seconds per message, with transitions limited to 1 second
- Brightness capped at 0.3 foot-candle measured from 250 feet between sunset and sunrise, with an automatic light-sensing dimmer required
- Maximum 32 sq ft for a single business, 50 sq ft for a multi-tenant use
- A malfunctioning CEVMS must be turned off until repaired and inspected by the City
We’d rather tell you this before you fall in love with the idea than after.
What’s Flatly Prohibited
The list is longer than most cities’, and it targets exactly the tactics small businesses reach for first:
- Inflatable signs — including balloons and inflatable objects
- Human or living signs — sign spinners and costumed characters
- Portable signs — including trailer-mounted signs, and removing the wheels doesn’t help
- Bandit signs — anything staked in the right-of-way or attached to utility poles, fences, trees or signal boxes
- Attention-getting devices — pennants, streamers, tinsel, ribbons, pinwheels, whirligigs, propellers, non-governmental flags, and blinking, rotating, chasing, flashing, strobe, search, flood or spot lights
The one that catches new tenants: a sign advertising a business that has ceased operating at that location for 180 days or more becomes a prohibited obsolete sign. If you’re taking over a space where the previous tenant’s sign has been dark for six months, that cabinet isn’t grandfathered — it’s a violation you inherited. We check that before you sign a lease if you ask us early enough.
How We Handle Your Tomball Permit
Tomball takes permit applications through its SmartGov portal, and the code is administered by a designated Sign Administrator who also enforces maintenance and removal.
Our process: confirm the parcel is inside city limits and not in unincorporated Harris County; check your frontage against the ground sign allowance and separation rules; confirm your sign type is one the code actually names; design to the dimensional limits; file the application; and handle the inspection. If your project needs something the code doesn’t list, we’ll tell you that up front rather than discovering it at review.
Figures above come from the City of Tomball Unified Development Code, Article 4 (Signs), which took effect January 1, 2026 and replaced the previous sign chapter. Codes change and administrative interpretation varies. We confirm the current requirements for your specific address with the city before design begins, at no cost.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did Tomball’s sign rules change?
Yes. The City of Tomball adopted a new Unified Development Code effective January 1, 2026, and its Article 4 on signs replaced the city’s previous sign chapter. Permitted sign types, prohibitions and standards were all revised, so older guidance found online may no longer be accurate.
How many freestanding signs can my Tomball property have?
One ground sign per 100 feet of street frontage, with at least 100 feet of separation between ground signs on the same property. Every lot is entitled to at least one. A corner lot may have one per frontage if that frontage is at least 50 feet.
Can I put up a pole sign in Tomball?
Only if your property is within 50 feet of a State Highway right-of-way line. Otherwise the code does not permit a pole sign, and a ground sign is the alternative.
Can I have an LED message sign in Tomball?
Changeable electronic variable message signs are only permitted for public tax-supported schools and along state rights-of-way. Any other property requires application to and approval by City Council. If approved, messages must be static, display for at least eight seconds with one-second transitions, cap brightness at 0.3 foot-candle from 250 feet after dark, and be limited to 32 square feet for a single business or 50 square feet for a multi-tenant use.
How much of my storefront window can I cover?
No more than 50 percent. Window signs, individually or combined, may not obscure visibility through an individual window by more than half.
Are roof signs allowed in Tomball?
Yes, unlike the City of Houston. They may not exceed 24 inches in height and may not exceed the maximum height of the zoning district.
What happens to the old sign on the space I’m leasing?
If it advertises a business that ceased operating at that location for 180 days or more, the code treats it as a prohibited obsolete sign. It is not grandfathered, and the obligation lands on the property.
How many signs can a shopping center have?
Where businesses share parking or pedestrian ways, one ground sign is permitted for each five entities, with a maximum of 300 square feet plus 50 square feet for each entity beyond five identified on the sign.
Are you actually located in Tomball?
Our showroom is in Katy, a straight run down the Grand Parkway, and we work across northwest Houston regularly. You get a real local team you can visit in person — not an out-of-town franchise.
