Sign Company in Houston, TX
Houston is the fourth-largest city in the country and one of the hardest places in Texas to get a sign right. There’s no traditional zoning here — but there is a Sign Code, and it decides your height, size and illumination based on the street you face. At UNI Signs we design, fabricate, permit and install custom business signs across Houston, backed by 10+ years of experience and 140+ five-star Google reviews. We’re a licensed sign contractor, which in this city isn’t a detail — it’s the reason your permit can be pulled at all.
Signs Across Every Corner of Houston
We install throughout the city and its business districts — from the Energy Corridor and Westchase along I-10 and Beltway 8, to Memorial City, Uptown and the Galleria, Spring Branch, the Heights, Midtown, the Texas Medical Center area, Braeswood, and the retail strips along Westheimer, Bissonnet and FM 1960.
Every one of those corridors has its own character and its own signage problem. A multi-tenant center on FM 1960 needs a pylon that reads at 45 mph. A boutique in the Heights needs dimensional letters that look designed, not generic. A medical office off the Beltway needs a monument that patients can find on the first pass. We build for the specific street you’re on — because in Houston, the street literally determines what’s legal.

Houston Sign Permits: The Part Nobody Warns You About
Houston has no traditional zoning, so business owners assume signage is a free-for-all. It isn’t — and three things surprise people every time:
- You can’t pull your own permit for the sign you actually want. The city’s online sign permit application is open to licensed contractors only. The one owner exception covers small non-electrical signs — nothing illuminated.
- The on-premise permit is an annual operating permit. It’s not a one-time cost. Your sign carries a recurring city obligation, invoiced every year, for as long as it’s up.
- A Houston mailing address doesn’t mean you’re in the City of Houston. Plenty of “Houston” addresses are unincorporated Harris County — a different office and a different process. Getting this wrong costs weeks.
Roof signs are prohibited outright, ground signs cap out at 42.5 feet, and your limits change with the category of the street your sign faces. We handle the whole process — jurisdiction check, drawings, notarized application, plan review comments and inspections — under our license.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a sign permit in Houston, TX?
Almost certainly yes. Houston has no traditional zoning, but the Houston Sign Code regulates size, height, placement and illumination for signs visible from the public right of way. We confirm your jurisdiction and handle the entire permit under our contractor license.
Can I pull the permit myself and save money?
Not for an illuminated sign. The City of Houston’s online sign permit application is open to licensed sign contractors only. The narrow owner exception covers non-electrical ground signs up to 60 sq ft and 8 ft tall, or wall signs no higher than 16 ft above grade.
How much does a business sign cost in Houston?
Illuminated channel letter storefront signs typically run $3,000 to $8,000; monument and pylon signs vary with size and height. City permit fees are separate — and the on-premise sign also carries an annual operating permit. We give free, itemized quotes with no surprises.
How long does the whole process take?
Typical fabrication is 3–4 weeks after design approval, plus a few weeks for city plan review. We run the permit in parallel with fabrication to protect your opening date.
Is my address really inside Houston city limits?
Look it up on hcad.org — if “City of Houston” appears as a taxing jurisdiction, you’re inside the city. If not, you’re likely in unincorporated Harris County, which has its own permit process through the County Engineer. We check this before anything else.
Are you actually located in Houston?
Our showroom is at 27027 Westheimer Pkwy in Katy, right off I-10 on Houston’s west side, and we install across the metro every week. You get a real local team you can visit in person — not an out-of-town franchise.
